Natural Christmas Tree Pick-up or Drop-off

Natural Christmas trees are collected curbside the first and second week of January on your regular City collection day.

  • Place trees curbside by 7 am only on your collection day. Trees should be clear of snow and ice and easily accessible for collection.
  • DO NOT place trees on top of or behind snowbanks.
  • Remove all decorations (bulbs, lights, tinsel), stands and bags before collection.
  • Trees over 2.1 m (6.9 ft) should be cut in half.
  • A maximum of 5 trees will be collected
  • Real wreaths will be collected with natural Christmas trees. Remove all decorations before placing them at the curb.

If you have a Christmas tree to dispose of after the second week of January, you can bring it to a Community Recycling Centre for free.

Alternatively, pre-register with the Royal Botanical Gardens to drop off your natural Christmas tree

The annual tree collection returns! RBG needs a maximum of 2,000 trees to strategically place them in critical zones. Community members are asked to pre-register their donation(s) before their drop-off to ensure we receive the desired amount for the project. Are you up to the calculated challenge? Let your tree continue to work for nature even after it’s done its traditional duty.

Visit the RBG's Pledge a Tree site.

Barton-Tiffany Outdoor Shelter Update 2

City staff have been working to fulfil the Mayor’s directive (MDI-2024-02) to prepare and install a temporary outdoor shelter site for residents in need.  Regrettably, City staff have shared that there have been some unexpected setbacks due to additional health and safety measures and production delays impacting delivery dates for the microshelters and washroom facilities. As a result, the site is expected to open beginning in mid-January, with a phased-in opening. The remaining outdoor shelter spaces will open soon after.

Name the Plow 2025

Your opportunity is back to quite literally name a Hamilton snow plow! The City's Transportation Division is looking to name an additional 10 snow-clearing vehicles this winter season and they need your help to come up with the most creative names possible.

The Name the Plow initiative is all in good fun, but snow clearing in Hamilton in serious business. With each upcoming winter weather event, City of Hamilton road crews are responsible for clearing approximately:

  • 6,522 kilometres of roadway
  • 885 kilometres of sidewalks
  • 414 kilometres of on-street bike lanes
  • 2,379 bus stops

The City can accomplish this with 115 City plows, over 300 contracted pieces of plowing equipment and 34 sidewalk plows.

  • Location: St. Mary Catholic Secondary School – Cafeteria, 200 Whitney Avenue, Hamilton, ON

Kindred Works invites residents to join their Public Open House to learn about their proposed redevelopment plans for 1570 Main Street West in Ainslie Wood. The application proposes a new 12-storey residential building consisting of 176 rental units, with a café/retail space on the ground floor.

Your input is valuable, and residents and community members are encouraged to review and provide feedback on the proposed plan.

Community members are welcome to stop by anytime during the Public Open House — team members will be available to speak with throughout the event, and there will be no formal presentations. Light refreshments will be served. Families are welcome, and the venue is barrier-free and wheelchair accessible.

Hamilton’s Design Review Panel reviewed the preliminary application on December 12, 2024. The package, along with staff comments on the proposal, will be posted on the City of Hamilton Website in the coming weeks under “2024 Meetings”  “December 12, 2024”: on the DRP website

The City of Hamilton is situated upon the traditional territories of the Erie, Neutral, Huron-Wendat, Haudenosaunee and Mississaugas. This land is covered by the Dish With One Spoon Wampum Belt Covenant, which was an agreement between the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek to share and care for the resources around the Great Lakes. We further acknowledge that this land is covered by the Between the Lakes Purchase, 1792, between the Crown and the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation.

Today, the City of Hamilton is home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island (North America), and we recognize that we must do more to learn about the rich history of this land so that we can better understand our roles as residents, neighbours, partners and caretakers.
