Ward 1 Infrastructure Projects Updates as of January 19, 2026

Ainslie Wood 

  • ALEXANDER PARK COMMUNITY HUB (Project website)
    • Scope: The Alexander Park Clubhouse Renewal project aims to provide an accessible, multi-purpose space for community use and programming opportunities. The park's existing fieldhouse will be renewed and updated to better serve the community's needs. Design
    • Project Manager: Chris Garneau, Facilities
    • Status: Renovations began in September 2025. Expected completion in Q2 2026. 
  • ALEXANDER PARK SKATE PARK (Project website)
    • Scope: Alexander Skate Park is a proposed +/-1,000m2 (10,764 Sq. Ft.) wheeled sports facility. The concrete facility will be integrated with the park’s existing amenities and cater to various wheeled sports, such as skateboarding, rollerblading, scooters, and BMX bikes.
    • Project Manager: Ken Wheaton, Landscape Architecture Services
    • Status: The Project was stalled in April 2024. It is expected to resume in Spring 2026. The project stalled due to water-table issues. Some redesign of the skate features was required as a result.

Kirkendall

  • HAAA PARK RENEWAL (Project website)
    • Rationale: The park's current features are reaching the end of their service life, and to ensure the community can continue to enjoy the HAAA Grounds, these ageing park features need to be replaced. The Renewal Plan community consultation ran from February 2021 to the Spring of 2022 (Review past public information presentations and meeting videos)
    • Scope: The City intended to build the Renewal Plan for the Hamilton Amateur Athletic Association (HAAA) Grounds in two phases. The first phase of construction, which includes a spray pad, playground, basketball court, seating areas, sun shelter, new pathways, park lighting, and tree planting, was planned for 2022-2023. The second phase, which includes the field house renovation, sports field, running track, outdoor fitness equipment, new pathways, skate dots, seating areas, park lighting, tree planting, memorial beds, and irrigated garden beds, was planned for 2024-2025.
    • Project Manager: Iain Miller
    • Note: The play structure and spray pad will be out of commission. Alternative play structures are located at Jackson Park (439 Jackson S), Mapleside Park (13 Mapleside Ave) and Beulah Park (59 Beulah Ave). Alternative spray pads: Victoria Park (500 King St W), Durand Park (89 Charlton Ave W), Churchill Park (255 Glen Rd), Alexander Park (201 Whitney Ave)
    • Status: Park construction beginning in Spring 2026. See Councillor update Sept 2025. The project went to tender in early January. Contract award in February. Pre-construction meetings February-March. Expected on-site in April.   
  • KIRKENDALL ROAD RESURFACING (Various locations) 2026
    • Scope: Road resurfacing with some sidewalk repair for the following streets: Jackson St W (Queen to Locke), Canada St (Queen to Locke), Hunter St W (Queen to Richmond), Homewood Ave (Dundurn to MacDonald), Beulah Ave, South St (Mountain to Dundurn), Glenfern (Undermount to Mountain)
    • Status: 2026 construction season
  • ABERDEEN AVE (Queen S to CPKC Bridge) and DUNDURN ST S (Aberdeen to Stanley) - FULL RECONSTRUCTION
    • Scope: Aberdeen Ave (Queen St S intersection to CPKC bridge) and Dundurn St S (Aberdeen to Stanley). All works from back-of-sidewalk to back-of-sidewalk. Three watermains; separation of the combined sewer system into sanitary and storm sewers. Full Complete Streets Revision.  *Note: Dundurn St S (Stanley to Hill St) resurfacing only.
    • Project Manager: Parham Salehi
    • Status: Consultation with residents is tentatively scheduled for Spring 2026. Construction is expected to occur in multi-year phases, beginning in 2027. At this time, we do not know which phase of reconstruction the area falls under: Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3.

Strathcona

  • LOCKES ST N (King W to York) & MARGARET ST
    • Scope: Subservice watermain replacement, resurfacing and traffic calming. Traffic calming measures will include raised crosswalks at Morden, Peter, and Florence, as well as a raised intersection at Locke and Napier.
    • Status: Tentatively 2026. Awaiting confirmation post 2026 budget deliberations.
  • VICTORIA PARK TENNIS COURTS REPLACEMENT
    • Scope: The existing tennis court amenities at this park have exceeded their useful life cycle and require replacement. The playing and practice courts, as well as the fencing, will be fully replaced. 
    • Project Manager: Andrea McDonald, Parks
    • Status: Fencing is present; old surface removed late fall 2025. The project will continue as long as the weather holds this fall and will then restart in Spring 2026.  

Westdale

  • CHURCHILL PARK PHASE 3 (Project website)
    • Scope: Phase 3 will address the pathways, the Parkside north-end stairs, and an informal teaching area
    • Project Manager: Ken Wheaton, Landscape Architecture Services
    • Status: Construction began in the fall of 2025, with the first priority being the northern stair connection. The remainder of the project will pick up in early Spring.
    • Note: North stairs. The contractor made an error regarding the footings. The contractor has removed the footings and is replacing them at their own cost. 
  • CHURCHILL PARK FIELD HOUSE WASHROOM UPGRADES
    • Scope: Complete washroom renovation. Winterised universal and accessible washrooms.
    • Status: Construction is scheduled for 2026

  • WESTDALE NORTH - RESURFACING - 2026
    • Scope: Devon Pl, Kipling Rd, Parkview Dr (Norwood to Franklin), Paradise Rd N (Norwood to North end)

    • Scope: To identify and recommend potential transportation-related improvements for the neighbourhood. When implemented, these improvements will benefit all users and better reflect the Complete-Livable-Better Streets concept of design outlined in the 2018 Hamilton Transportation Master Plan

    • Scope: Construction of New Bump-outs on Sanders Boulevard at Thorndale Cres, and another at Binkley Road. Raised pedestrian crossovers at the Hamilton Rail Trail on the following roads in Ainslie Wood: Stroud Rd, Broadway Ave, Emerson St, Leland St, Rifle Range Rd. Ewen Rd - a multi-use path on the west side that provides a direct crossing.
  • Mapes Ave - Aylett St to Leland St: Resurfacing - Completed 2023
    • Scope: Roadway and sidewalk repairs 
  • Main & Whitney (HD17A) Water Pumping Station Municipal Class Environmental Assessment and Conceptual Design - Study Completed 2024

    • Scope: Continuing the projected bike lanes on Main St W from Wilson St in Ancaster to Ofield Rd. Bikeway from Ewen Rd (end of City's portion of the rail trail) along Ofield to meet the protected lanes on Main St W

    • Scope: Included repair of concrete curbs and sidewalks (at various locations), milling the roadway and re-surfacing with hot mix asphalt on Kent and traffic calming mechanisms from Hunter St W to Amelia as part of the Bicycle Boulevard project, still in pilot phase. Status: Construction completed in 2023. Evaluation survey 2024 
  • Canada Street Sidewalk Repairs - Completed 2024
    • Scope: Canada Street from Queen St S to the extreme west end should expect to see sidewalk repairs at selected locations.

  • Aberdeen Avenue - Resurfacing - Short-term hold* until full reconstruction - Completed 2025  
    • Scope: Resurfacing only from Dundurn St S to Longwood Rd S. Completed*Short-term refers to the length of time it will be in place. When the section from Dundurn to the bridge is fully reconstructed, the resurfacing will be removed to complete the substructure work on the water and sewer mains. At this time, we do not know which phase of reconstruction the area falls under: Phase 1, Phase 2, or Phase 3.

  • Victoria Park Water Filling Station - Completed

  • Victoria Park Playground Enhancement - Completed 2022
    • Scope: Add play pieces that encourage children of all abilities to use the playground. See Summary Report on City's Engage Hamilton site

  • Victoria Park Lighting Improvements (South End) - Completed

  • Pedestrian Crossing Queen St N & Napier St - Completed
    • Scope: A combination of pedestrian-activated and actuated signals for Napier St vehicles. Traffic signals that adjust based on the presence of vehicles are generally known as actuated signals.

  • Breadalbane Resurfacing - Completed 2022
    • Scope: Included repair of concrete curbs and sidewalks (at various locations), milling the roadway and re-surfacing with hot mix asphalt on Kent and traffic calming mechanisms from Hunter St W to Amelia as part of the Bicycle Boulevard project, still in pilot phase.     • Scope: New easy-access play structure, rubberised and accessible surfaces, accessible saucer swing, panels and musical elements
  • Victoria Park Spray Pad and Sun Shelter - Completed June 2024
    • Scope: Replacement of the existing spray pad, construction of a new sun shelter, construction of a new plaza area with seating, and park lighting upgrades. The new spray pad is shaped like the shadow of the historical Crystal Palace, which once stood on the same ground. Note that these projects mark the completion of the Victoria Park Master Plan, which began over a decade ago. Project website
  • Victoria Park Field House Mural - Completed 2024
    • Artist Andrea Manica transformed a simple field house from bland to fabulous with her mural, "Seasons of Migration." The artwork features scenes depicting species native to the Hamilton area, with spring and fall migrations illustrated on either side of the building. White-tailed deer, northern flickers, monarch butterflies, great blue herons, and bufflehead ducks all appear throughout the mural.
  • Barton St W, North sidewalk connection (Queen N to Crooks St) - Completed 2025
    • Scope: Connect residents on the north side of Barton St W (Queen to Crooks) with sidewalks leading to controlled stops for safer pedestrian crossings.

  • Churchill Park Mural (North side of the clubhouse) - Completed 2023
    • Artist Kyle Joedicke created a masterpiece mural on the north side of the Churchill Clubhouse. Sparked by the ongoing housing crisis, local artist Kyle Joedicke’s stunning mural in Churchill Park urges viewers to look beyond the surface and recognise the personal stories behind every face on the street. With its striking imagery, the piece serves as a powerful reminder to approach those we encounter with empathy and awareness.

    • Scope: 1. Whitton Rd, Oakwood Pl, & Cline Ave S (King to Sterling) Resurfacing; 2. Sterling St: Roadway resurfacing, sidewalk repairs, protected bike lanes, raised intersection at Sterling and Dalewood  Cres., 3. King St W - Traffic calming: Independent Pedestrian Crossing signal on King St W at Haddon Ave. 2. 4. Reduction in radii: Cline Ave at King St W; reduced width of the road opening.
